The redevelopment of Muizenberg Beachfront has been pivotal in shaking off the seedy image of the past. Yet, the traffic circle on the beachfront remained an eyesore. So in keeping with the agreement signed with the City’s Roads Department in 2012, MID partnered with Muizenberg Ward Councillor, Dave D’Alton to commence work on upgrading the circle. This will complement the ongoing transformation of the beachfront that is being driven by substantial private investment.
As shown in the photos on this page, the inner walls have been built and work on the project is progressing well.
Work on the Surfers’ Corner Traffic Circle upgrade commenced at the end of January 2015.
MID is responsible for the perimeter wall, paving and landscaping parts of the project with an estimated cost of R120 000. This is in addition to the R170 000 made available from Ward Budget Allocations by Councillor, Dave D’Alton. The possible development of a statue and walk of fame falls outside the upgrade being undertaken by the Muizenberg Improvement District.
What has happened to the plan to build a surfing monument at the circle?

MID relinquished the responsibility for the implementation and management of the surfers walk of fame element due to the complications of the City’s new public art policy. Members of the surfing fraternity have put much thought and effort into how Muizenberg’s surfing legacy can be highlighted and they may approach the City’s Public Arts and Culture department and apply to build a monument in the centre of the traffic circle.
