Programmes

The Muizenberg CID manages a range of programmes, each designed to deliver maximum impact in the public spaces. Interfaces between programmes are carefully crafted to ensure that each complements the other and information flows freely across programmes. Programme impact is measured on a monthly basis.

Urban Cleaning

The role of the cleaning team is to provide top-up street cleaning services that compliments the City’s Solid Waste services within the MID area. The team also works closely with MID public safety and social development as additional “eyes and ears”.

MID’s cleaning services focusses on the following:

  • Litter management in public streets and MID maintained gardens
  • Sweeping streets and gutter systems in public space
  • Report of environmental threats to public health and safety via the City’s C3 notification
  • Assist with cleaning and greening projects & painting over tagging in the Church Road subway and the Atlantic Road bridge
  • A bi-annual infrastructure audit is compiled by MID to ensure that all issues and faults are documented and reported to relevant City departments for action.
  • Residents are also encouraged to make use of the City’s C3 notification system whereby they can log infrastructure and maintenance problems for themselves.

Public Safety

The MID’s public safety measures are focused on creating safe, usable urban spaces, through presence, CCTV monitoring, efficient communication networks, partnerships and neighbourhood connectedness.

With a proactive strategy the MID has LPR (license plate recognition) cameras at all major inflow to the area, CCTV cameras at strategic points, proactive 24-hour monitoring in a MID-owned control room and supportive Incident Desk technology..

MID’s current service offerings include 24-hour ADT presence and patrols with two ADT vehicles  and one MID vehicle, as well as the benefit of close relationships with SAPS, LE and the CPF.

Long-term MID resident and current Public Safety Director Wayne Turner brings a wealth of experience and insight to the role, fostering continuity and driving strategic progress in this vital portfolio.

Social Development

Responsible Giving and Practical Support

In terms of Social and Economic Development, the MID plays a facilitation, enablement and oversight role, ensuring that the appropriate services from the City are availed of by the needy in the area. The MID also supports the many NGO’s operating in Muizenberg, extending our own abilities, and working to enable these NGO’s, with networks, advice, donations (where board-approved).

How can you respond to someone in need?
The MID promotes responsible giving and practical support to street people. Providing money or basic needs to people sleeping rough fuels addiction and can cause chronic homelessness. The kindest way to assist someone in need on the streets is to put them in touch with professional support services. You can do this by direting them to the U-turn centre on Killarney Road or by providing them with a Mi-change voucher.

If you see a homeless person in distress, you can also contact the City’s dedicated call centre for homelessness on 0800 872 201 for assistance.

Environment and Greening

Keeping Muizenberg a natural wonder

Muizenberg is one of the most attractive spaces to live and work in Cape Town thanks to its unique architectural character of the village, a vibrant beachfront, and public green spaces. And the National Georgraphic ranks it as one of 20 Best Surfing Towns in the world.

The MID collaborates with the City of Cape Town, residents, businesses, and other partners to landscape and maintain indigenous gardens on prioritised roads / streets, to tackle derelict buildings, absentee landlords and over-crowding of rented properties, and the ongoing development of our beach front.

Future environmental upliftment progress depends upon support from various partners, like Friends of Muizenberg Park, business and community volunteers. Please see some ways to get involved below.
